Potential effect of coronavirus on cynomolgus monkey sources

Sponsors who plan to initiate toxicology studies in cynomolgus macaques should be aware that the coronavirus outbreak may have an impact on availability of mainland China origin macaques.  If necessary, substitution of macaques of other mainland Asia origin (e.g. Cambodia, Viet Nam) does not appear to be a major issue and Aclairo colleague Jeffrey Moehlenkamp shared a fairly recent abstract that compared a variety of parameters for cynos of different origins and concluded that Mauritian origin monkeys were the outliers and that others tended to be comparable.

This comparative study was conducted to assess background physiologic and pharmacologic parameters of cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) from Cambodia, from a mixed Asian source (Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia), and from Mauritius…. (abstract truncated due to character limitations)
