In response to a growing clientele in the western United States and Asia-Pacific region, Dr. Jeff Engelhardt has assumed the role of Vice President, West Coast Operations, effective April 1, 2012. Dr. Engelhardt will direct EPL’s further expansion into the region from an office located in Southern California. Dr. Engelhardt will be the primary contact for new and current clients in the region, and he will provide general pathology support (e.g., study pathologist, peer review, etc.), as well as pathology and regulatory consultation to clients requesting these services. Dr. Peter Mann will continue to serve as Manager of EPL Northwest from his office in Seattle, WA; together with Dr. Engelhardt, EPL will be able to be more responsive to our clients and enhance the unparalleled level of service expected of EPL. In order to allow Dr. Engelhardt to focus on this new area of responsibility, Dr. Jerry Hardisty has resumed his role as President of EPL. These organizational changes will ensure that EPL continues to be the premier histopathology services organization for the industry.

Although a Sponsor can never know exactly how a regulatory authority will respond to toxicity data, there are great examples of how a Pathology Working Group (PWG) can be beneficial. Recently, the study pathologist for a mouse carcinogenicity study identified a relatively low number of renal tumors that raised the concern of the involved regulatory authority. A review of the tumors by an internationally renowned expert concluded that the neoplasms were spontaneous in origin and not due to the test article. A PWG composed of five prominent pathologists including the study pathologist and the expert was chaired by Dr. Jerry Hardisty and reaffirmed the findings and conclusions of the expert. The PWG report was submitted to the regulatory authority for their consideration. A response came that they reviewed the evidence presented in the PWG re-evaluation and concurred with the PWG that the renal neoplasms were not due to the test article. While an outcome like this cannot be guaranteed, the PWG was quite valuable in the decision in favor of the Sponsor.
